The Doors

The dynamic, mesmerizing, and at times controversial performances of The Doors cemented their status as one of the most influential rock bands of the twentieth century. Many of our buyers are always searching for quality The Doors memorabilia, such as this The Doors fully-signed album that attracted quite a bit of attention at auction. That kind of buzz translates to high payouts for our consignors! Jim Morrison’s autograph in particular is rare and elusive in any form, but RR Auction has offered and sold multiple signed pieces from the famed lead singer.

Pieces such as Jim Morrison’s handwritten lyrics to “Love Her Madly” and this original sketch from 14-year-old Jim Morrison have garnered quite a bit of attention, resulting in stunning sales for our consignors. Another remarkable consignment was these The Doors signed Elektra portraits, which were featured in our Fine Autographs and Artifacts Auction in August 2020. Fine Books Magazine covered this sale, writing that, “This is the only set of these entire band signed Elektra Records promo photos that RR Auction has ever offered, with the elusive and much sought after Morrison autograph.” A highlight from that sale, these photos earned $18,263 leaving little doubt as to the dedication of our bidders!

These four photos were originally distributed by Elektra Records, whom the band signed with in 1966.

Other personal items from band members have also made their way to the auction block such as a Jim Morrison signed contract for The Doors’ debut performance on “American Bandstand.” The contract stated that Morrison would receive $210 payment and “a whopping $2.50 clothing allowance,” stated Page Six. A letter written by the lead singer was also covered by NME stating that, “Morrison’s letter was penned from L’Hotel in Paris, where the singer moved after his band finished recording ‘LA Woman’ in March 1971.”

This contract marks The Doors national television debut on American Bandstand in 1967. This landmark document is signed at the conclusion by Morrison and television producer Edward J. Yates.
