Edgar Mitchell’s Apollo 14-Flown Rolex GMT-Master ‘Pepsi’ Sells for Over $2 Million at Auction
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BOSTON, MA –A Rolex GMT-Master ‘Pepsi’ worn by Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell sold for $2,163,199 at auction, announced Boston-based RR Auction. This rare timepiece from Mitchell’s personal collection is one of only two Apollo-flown Rolex watches ever sold publicly, symbolizing both the dangerous challenges faced during the Apollo missions and the enduring legacy and love of Rolex craftsmanship.
This Rolex GMT-Master, with its distinctive blue-and-red bezel, accompanied Mitchell on his Apollo 14 mission in 1971, where he became the sixth man to walk on the moon. The watch was documented in both pre-flight footage of Mitchell suiting up and onboard video from within the Command Module. Engraved on the caseback are the words, “Worn by Cdr. E. Mitchell on Apollo 14, 1971, To Karlin—My Daughter,” transforming it into both a flown artifact and a deeply personal family heirloom.
Equipped with a 26-jewel Oyster Perpetual Movement, a black dial, and the ‘Pepsi’ bezel—named for its blue-and-red color scheme—the GMT-Master was designed to track both local time and GMT. Its rotating bezel, developed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways, was especially valued by pilots for international travel, although astronauts like Mitchell also carried it into space. Rolex’s signature ‘Cyclops’ magnifier over the date indicator completes this classic, sought-after design.
The only other Apollo-flown Rolex ever auctioned was Ron Evans’s Apollo 17 GMT-Master, which sold in 2009. Similarly, in 2015, RR Auction sold Apollo 15 Commander Dave Scott’s Bulova chronograph, worn on the lunar surface, for over $1.5 million. Additionally, Wally Schirra’s 18K Gold Omega Speedmaster Professional, commemorating the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, fetched $1.9 million at auction in 2022.
“This Rolex GMT-Master isn’t just a watch—it’s a piece of space history, flown on one of humanity’s greatest adventures. It represents both the precision of Rolex craftsmanship and the daring spirit of Apollo astronauts,” said Bobby Livingston, Executive Vice President at RR Auction.
