Nicknamed the King of Cool, Steve McQueen was not only a magnetic performer on screen, but a skilled racer behind the wheel. Becoming a huge box office draw, McQueen became well known for his stoic portrayals of anti-hero characters in the 1960s. While working on films like The Great Escape and Bulitt, McQueen would often perform his own stunts for car chase sequences. He even took his motor skills to the track, racing under the pseudonym Harvey Mushman in several competitions.

We sold McQueen’s annotated script for The Great Escape in September 2019 for $68,750. The manuscript contains notes written in McQueen’s own hand, modifying and striking through some of his lines and adding his own commentary on several scenes. Released in 1963, The Great Escape was the film that secured McQueen’s reputation as a remarkable Hollywood star and remains a classic escape flick.
