With a career that spanned over 60 years and four Academy Awards, Katharine Hepburn has been named as the greatest female star of classic Hollywood. Hepburn gained a reputation as a 20th-century ‘modern woman,’ playing strong-willed, independent women, including characters like Jo March and Rose Sayer. As one of classic Hollywood’s greatest starlets, Hepburn’s status has our bidders looking to add new pieces to their collections.
Autographs and signed photos from Hepburn have gone under the hammer at RR auction, like this signed portrait inscribed to famous director George Cukor. Cukor directed Hepburn numerous times including in Little Women and Holiday, and they enjoyed an amicable friendship offset. Earning a marvelous winning bid of $11,296, this photograph is proof of their cordial connection.
Outside of acting, Hepburn also had an interest in watercolor painting. This was a hobby she embraced for about 50 years, but she still found ways to weave in her passion for acting. RR Auction had the opportunity to auction off two of Hepburn’s watercolor portraits. The first of these self-portraits is of Hepburn dressed in a military hat and overcoat, and a second as her character Eleanor of Aquitane in the film The Lion in Winter, a role that would earn her an Academy Award. Both of these paintings were given to Hepburn’s wardrobe mistress for both films, Violet Murray. These paintings ended up selling for a combined value of nearly $23,000.
