While she may be most known for her series of eight marriages, Elizabeth Taylor became one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. Starting out as a child actor, Taylor was able to make the transition to adult roles and had a successful career that spanned several decades. She received several accolades for her work including a Golden Globe and two academy awards. Taylor has been a popular figure among our buyers, and we have had the opportunity to handle some intriguing pieces from the Cleopatra actress.

RR Auction was featured in several articles regarding our sensational sale of an unprecedented archive of Taylor’s love letters for $48,645. According to the BBC, this archive of over sixty letters was written to her fiance at the time William Pawley Jr. Written when she was just seventeen years-old, Taylor discussed a wide range of personal experiences including her insecurities, her disdain towards her studio MGM, and two films she had worked on, A Place in the Sun and The Big Hangover. Most of all, however, “she gushes about Pawley… reassuring him over and over that her love is true,” said Artdaily.

A postcard photo of the Hotel Paisano in Marfa, Texas where Giant was shot. Signatures include Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Jane Withers, Maurice Jara, Gerald Frank, and dialogue coach Robert Hinkle.
The reverse of the postcard featuring signatures from James Dean, George Stevens Jr., Chill Wills, Victor Millan, Mercedes McCambridge, Ana Maria Majalca, Valley Keene, Earle Holliman, Tina Menard, Pilar Del Rey, David [Jiminez], and Monte Hale.

Rare signed photos from Taylor have also surfaced at our auctions, such as this signed postcard from the cast of the 1956 film Giant. Filmed in 1955, Giant starred Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean in his final role before his fatal car crash just eight days later. Since Dean’s death was soon after filming finished, this photograph features a rare combination of signatures from two of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
