Charles Schulz began drawing when he was just a young boy, a talent that would later culminate in his most influential creation – the Peanuts series. The Peanuts comic strip debuted in 1950, with Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and their gang of colorful characters appearing in more than 17,000 comic strips over a 50 year span. Schulz took much inspiration for the series from his own personal experiences, creating bite-sized stories that have touched the hearts of many. With the Peanuts’ popularity enduring well into the modern day, it’s no surprise collectors are on the look out for rare and original Schulz pieces for their collections.
RR Auction has seen numerous original Peanuts comic strips come through our doors, with many selling for tens of thousands of dollars. Among his most popular sellers are this Love Thy Dog strip, this Snoopy World War I comic, and another original comic entitled Bye Bye Blanket. In all of these comics you can find well known Peanuts characters including Lucy and Linus Van Pelt, the beloved dog Snoopy, and the series’ principal character, Charlie Brown. Combined, these three hand drawn and inked comic strips realized over $100,000.
Peanuts comic strips have been a must for collectors at RR Auction, but other Schulz pieces have also garnered attention from our bidders in recent years. Unpublished sketches of his Peanuts characters have achieved successful bids for thousands of dollars, like these sketches of Charlie Brown in his baseball hat and glove and Snoopy relaxing atop his dog house.
You can also find more personalized Schulz drawings like this original drawing for gold medalist Pat McCormick. In this comedic sketch, Schulz places a cutout of McCormick diving from the top of a tree into a bird bath as Snoopy fills it with a water hose while shouting, “Not yet! Not yet!” Schulz was a lover of sports as well as the arts, and McCormick’s inclusion in the sketch makes it truly one-of-a-kind. RR Auction sold this endearing and creative drawing sold for $6,145.
