Dickens’ letters have also had great success at RR, especially those relating to his literary works, like this letter regarding a reading tour for A Christmas Carol – written on Christmas day. For $13,475, RR Auction sold this letter written by Dickens where he references his 1850 novel David Copperfield. Dickens writes to J. C. d’Arnaud Gerkens, praising his interpretation of his novel, “I can honestly express to you my great admiration of the delicacy and tenderness with which you have illustrated my book.” Gerkens’ illustrations were not made for commercial use but out of sheer love for the novel, but the sketches struck a chord with the author – prompting him to write this letter praising Gerkens’ interpretation.
