In 2022, deep-pocketed collectors clamored for Bob Dylan’s autographed early poems, as well as an unprecedented archive of Bob Dylan’s handwritten love letters from the young Bob Zimmerman to his then high school sweetheart Barbara Ann Hewitt. Selling for an incredible price of $669,875, this lot of 42 love letters spans over 150 pages of handwritten material. At this time, Dylan still went by his birth name Robert Zimmerman. “Penned between 1957 and 1959…Zimmerman wrote about popular clothing trends and cars of the time, as well as the music he was listening to…The teen even shared with Hewitt his plan to change his name and one day sell a million records” writes Sarah Kuta at Smithsonian Magazine.

Letters and conversations between Dylan and his close friend Tony Glover made their way to auction in 2020, with much of it coming from Dylan and Glover’s early years. “At the center of the auction are many hours of recorded interviews, early performance tapes and handwritten correspondence with Dylan, including letters, postcards and signed gig fliers from the early 1960s,” according to the StarTribune. RR Auction appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine for this incredible sale. “As Bob Dylan’s career blossomed, he kept in close touch with his friend Tony Glover. The pair’s conversations and letters—published here for the first time—show a Dylan that few people knew,” stated Douglas Brinkley in his article discussing the archives. Vanity Fair also reported on this auction, citing that an anonymous bidder won most of the archives.
