RR Auction is getting into the spirit of the season with a new selection of cards from royals and rock and roll icons going under the tree.
The royal family has a century’s worth of experience of sending out holiday cards. Nowadays, you’ll find the latest generation of royals sending out minimalist posed portraits or candids of them enjoying various outings. Before those, citizens of the UK would find formally crested cards in their mailboxes, each fitted with stately photographs of the family members. And you can find countless examples of these on the market.
Take this card affixed with a lovely portrait of Elizabeth, the Queen Mother as she shares her best wishes for the season with the recipient. Princess Diana and King Charles III continued this tradition, even as their family grew. Christmas cards like these see high bids at auction, with previous ones of Charles and Diana fetching upwards of $1,000.
Meanwhile, others might opt for a more classic approach. RR Auction’s selection of cards include those of music legends like Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Radiohead, each one featuring festive illustrations of Christmas and winter cottages. The cards are estimated by RR to be worth between $200 and $1500.
If you’re lucky you might find something with a little bit of extra cheer, like when Queen sent out a card during their 1984 ‘The Works’ Tour. Signed by original band members Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor, they told their fans to “Give it the works this Christmas from Queen.” The card was completed with a front image showing a packed arena cheering in front of a brightly illuminated stage. According to RR Auction, the card is expected to sell for $6000.
But, while holiday greetings continue to change shape over the years, we are grateful for your support every day. We look forward to making history and selling history with you in 2025.
