Al Capone’s Rare 1926 Twice-Signed ‘Gold Coin’ Chicago Bank Document Sells for $37,500 at Auction

BOSTON, MA — RR Auction is excited to announce the sale of an extraordinary piece of history: a rare 1926 Chicago bank document signed twice by the infamous gangster Al Capone, along with signatures from his mother, Theresa Capone, and his wife, Mae Capone. The document sold for $37,500 during the Fine Autographs and Artifacts auction, which concluded on October 16, 2024.
The one-page document, dated November 18, 1926, details a loan (Loan No. 6223) for $45.00 in gold coin, due on May 18, 1931. It notes: “Due to the order of Ourselves…at the office of Lawndale National Bank in the City of Chicago…with interest after maturity until paid, at the rate of seven percent, per annum, being for an installment of interest on our principal and note No. 5 being of even date herewith for the sum of $1,500.00.” The document is signed by Al Capone, his mother, and his wife, with additional endorsements on the reverse by all three.
Graded as “NM-MT 8 by PSA/DNA, this twice-signed “gold coin” bank document is a standout piece of memorabilia. Al Capone, who rose to prominence in the 1920s as a key figure in the Chicago underworld, remains a controversial and fascinating figure in American history. This document is a remarkable piece of history and one of the finest we have ever offered, showcasing the personal and financial dealings of Al Capone, a figure who continues to captivate.
