Vivien Leigh

A powerhouse performer of the screen and stage, the reputation that precedes Vivien Leigh is one of great acclaim. While her role as Scarlett O’Hara in 1939’s Gone With the Wind remains her most recognizable and influential work, her prosperous career speaks for itself. While she is widely associated with being a screen actress, Leigh was a patron of the stage playing comedic roles as well as classic Shakespearean characters like Juliet, Ophelia, and Lady Macbeth. Her diverse talent solidified her rank as one of Tinsel Town’s greats, and her popularity at auction has yet to dwindle.

You can even find some of Leigh’s personal belongings, such as her handwritten book of poetry that sold for $6,488. Written during the 20s and 30s when Leigh was only a teenager, this anthology contained poems transcribed by Leigh from poets like Thomas Moore and Rupert Brooke. She even dabbled in writing original poems, including one called, “Enchanted Mountain.” The book was labeled with her given name, Vivian Hartley, making this piece remarkable and truly one-of-a-kind. It wasn’t until the 1930s that she had created the name we now know her by, taking on the surname Leigh after her first husband, Leigh Holman, and swapping out the “a” in her first name for the more uncommon “e”.
