A Tinsel Town giant, Humphrey Bogart made history as classic Hollywood’s greatest male star. Beginning his acting career in theatre, Bogart made his feature film debut in Up the River with Claire Luce and Spencer Tracy. From there, he appeared in more than 40 movies including the timeless hit Casablanca alongside fellow starlet Ingrid Bergman. Along with co-starring with other Hollywood greats like Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis, Bogart won an Oscar for his work on The African Queen in 1951. RR auction has seen a number of Humphrey Bogart items come through our doors, and these pieces have piqued the interest of our buyers.
Signed photographs have garnered lots of bids from our clients, such as this publicity photo taken for his 1946 film The Big Sleep or this photo of a young, grinning Bogart. Personally-owned items from Bogart have also gone for high prices, like this collection of Bogart items that reached a high bid of $4,027. Featured in this collection were several unique items including a personalized gold pen used by Bogart to sign an autograph for US Golf Network President Al Wester. 10 Casablanca cast signatures were also included, along with signatures from three of Bogart’s wives.
RR Auction has also handled some of Bogart’s personal letters, including one to his fan club where he discusses working on his new film, an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s To Have and Have Not. In part the letter reads, “I have started my new picture… and I must say it feels good to get back in the harness again. Thank you all again for your continued loyalty.” This picture was also 19-year-old Lauren Bacall’s debut feature. Bacall and Bogart would go on to marry in 1945, a year after the film’s release. This lot ended up selling for a successful $3,113.
