Going for a startling price of $61,866, this archive of Marilyn Monroe negatives were taken on the set of one of her breakout films, Niagara. The archive of 227 photos taken by photographer Jock Carroll features Monroe in a variety of candid poses on the sets for the movie. According to Barron’s, “Carroll (1919-1995) was on an assignment for Weekend photography magazine, but he became friends with Monroe and shot many photographs of the 26-year-old, as well as the sets, scenery, and Niagara Falls.” Along with the photos, RR Auction sold the rights to the negatives originally held by Jock’s son, Angus Carroll.
Signed pieces from Monroe have sold for staggering prices, like this signed photograph inscribed to her choreographer Jack Cole. RR auction has also offered more elusive signatures from Monroe, such as her first film contract with Twentieth Century Fox. The contract bears two signatures, “Marilyn Monroe,” and “Norma Jeane Dougherty.” While many are familiar with her now famous moniker, items signed with the name “Norma Jeane Dougherty” are much harder to come by. At sixteen, Monroe married her first husband James Dougherty, a union that lasted for four years until their divorce in 1946. The inclusion of Monroe’s surname from her first marriage made this an ultra unique piece, and our bidders agreed as this contract sold for $32,103.
