Clark Gable

Clark Gable had a formidable career that lasted the better part of four decades, earning him the moniker of the King of Hollywood. Most of his career was spent as a leading man, and he worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Jean Harlow, Vivien Leigh, and Marilyn Monroe. Unlike some other actors of his generation, Gable remained a consistent box office success due to his academy award nominated performance as Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind. Nearly a century later, Gable has remained a consistent draw not only at the box office but on the auction block as well.

Hollywood rarities like this signed portrait of Gable as Rhett Butler were a huge hit with bidders, selling for $11,497. Unlike signed photos of Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara, signed photos of Gable as Butler are a bit more difficult to come by. The photo’s inscription reads, “To Marie Lavoria, Kindest Wishes Always, Clark Gable” and was obtained by a cameraman who had worked with him on Gone With the Wind.

We have also had the honor of handling screen-used pieces from some of Gable’s famous films. Take a look at this Clark Gable screen-worn jacket used in his final film The Misfits. Playing the role of cowboy Gay Langland, Gable starred opposite blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe in what turned out to be their final film before their deaths. According to the New Haven Register, “it was purchased at Parker’s Western Wear in Reno as shooting of the film was beginning.” The desirability of this jacket is enhanced by its use in the film that many consider to be the actor’s finest work, including Gable himself. This lot realized a high bid of $6,680.
